Boutique Whitening Gel kits include formulations containing either hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, or a combination of both.
Hydrogen peroxide serves as a potent oxidizing agent, initiating the whitening process by generating oxygen free radicals. These radicals work to transform larger pigment molecules into smaller, less noticeable ones.

The European Directive states, dental professionals are restricted to selling products with a maximum hydrogen peroxide concentration of 6%. Conversely, over-the-counter products, which don't necessitate dental supervision, can contain only 0.01% hydrogen peroxide. Unfortunately, these low-peroxide products prove ineffective for teeth whitening due to their minimal peroxide concentration.

Carbamide peroxide, on the other hand, combines hydrogen peroxide with urea. Urea plays a vital role in stabilizing the formula, giving carbamide peroxide a more consistent and extended shelf life compared to hydrogen peroxide alone.

Under the European Directive, dental professionals have the authority to prescribe carbamide peroxide with concentrations of up to 16%. When carbamide peroxide comes into contact with water, it degrades into urea and hydrogen peroxide. Notably, a given volume of carbamide peroxide will yield a 35% volume of hydrogen peroxide when it undergoes this breakdown process.
