Bacteria in plaque

Did you know that plaque contains over 300 species of bacteria? Not all of these are responsible for tooth decay, however. The most commonly found bacterial species in plaque are Streptococcus Sanguis and Streptococcus Mutans and it’s these two nasties that are responsible for most of the damage to teeth. They feed on sugars and starches in our food, and as they digest them, they convert them into acids. These acids erode tooth enamel and irritate the gums, causing them to pull away from the teeth and creating space for even more bacteria to invade below the gum line. Regular brushing is key to removing plaque from your mouth, while use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash can also reduce levels of microbial activity, reducing your risk of decay.
