Healthy snack swap
We all know that diet can have a significant impact on our oral health – but did you know that certain foods can actually help to protect teeth from decay? Scientists have discovered that dark coloured berries including cranberries and blueberries contain phenols that slow the growth of decay-causing bacteria, and also prevent them from sticking to teeth. The study, published in the European Journal of Oral Sciences, also revealed that the effects continue even after these foods are swallowed. It’s hoped that extracts from berries can be used to develop decay-busting toothpastes and mouthwashes – but for now, why not recommend a handful of berries to your patients as a healthy snack swap?
